How to Play the OvA flute

In this video we show you the basics of the OvA flute

Introduction

Positioning the Instrument
Sit comfortably, either on a chair or on the floor with your legs crossed, and place the instrument in your lap. The rounded base should rest securely against your body. You can gently cradle the instrument between your legs to keep it stable while playing.

Basic Tones
The instrument has an open-hole system that allows you to produce different notes by covering or uncovering the holes with your hands:
– Low C2: Begin by covering all the holes with your hands. This produces the lowest note, a deep C2.
– G2: Lift the fingers of your right hand while keeping your left-hand fingers in place. This will produce a G2.
– C3: Lift the fingers of both hands to bring out a higher C3 tone.
– D3: Completely remove both hands from the instrument to reach a D3.

Sliding Notes and Nature Sounds:
By waving your hands toward and away from the holes, you can create sliding notes that glide between pitches. This allows for expressive, fluid sounds similar to whale calls or other natural elements. Experiment with how fast or slow you move your hands to control the speed and depth of the glissando effect.

Tapping and Percussion
Like an Udu drum, tapping the sides or the holes of the instrument creates resonant percussion sounds. You can:
– Tap near the holes for a bassier, deeper tone.
– Tap on the side surfaces for a sharper, more drum-like sound.
– Open taps for louder, clear tones.
– Closed taps where your hand stays close to the surface for a more muffled effect.

Combining Tapping and Fluting
The beauty of this instrument is the combination of rhythmic tapping and melodic flute sounds. Start by playing a note (e.g., C2) and lightly tap the side of the instrument in sync with your breathing or melody. Then, gradually lift your fingers to shift pitches while continuing to tap. This fusion of percussive and melodic elements creates a rich, complex soundscape that allows for endless creative expression.

Expressive Playing
This instrument is highly responsive to hand movements and pressure, making it perfect for meditative or storytelling music. Use the sliding notes to mimic natural sounds, like the wind or sea creatures, and explore the way your breath and hands shape each tone. Tapping can add an energetic pulse to your playing, or it can be subtle and calming, depending on your intention.

How do I keep my instrument in good health?

Occasional clean your instrument with a soft, dry cloth and use it’s protective case to keep your flute in good condition. Avoid dropping, hitting, or putting it on a hard surface. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures. After playing, let the instrument breath for a bit before closing its case. Avoid using any chemicals.

How do we decorate our instruments

We use our own specially designed techniques to decorate our instruments, avoiding any use of chemicals. Our instruments are made from pure clay, and we decorate them with several layers of homemade Terra Sigillata. This very fine milky clay solution is made from the finest clay particles we gather from different spots along our nearby river, providing us with a range of natural colors after firing. Next, we use a soap bubble technique, which involves several different colors of Terra Sigillata, infused with gold or copper colored Mica which creates unique patterns and a mother-of-pearl effect when light shines on our instruments.
