This ceramic instrument, inspired on the Native American Flute (NAF), combines simplicity with a rich palette of expressive sounds. With its pentatonic scale, the Natey is a wonderful instrument for both beginners and advanced players. One unique aspect of the Natey is that it’s a vessel flute. This means it plays an octave lower than a comparable open flute, giving it a deep, resonant sound despite its small size, making it a true “pocket” NAF.

Occasional clean your instrument with a soft, dry cloth and use it’s protective case to keep your flute in good condition. Avoid dropping, hitting, or putting it on a hard surface. We use our own specially designed techniques to decorate our instruments, avoiding any use of chemicals. Our instruments are made from pure clay, and we decorate them with several layers of homemade Terra Sigillata. This very fine milky clay solution is made from the finest clay particles we gather from different spots along our nearby river, providing us with a range of natural colors after firing. Next, we use a soap bubble technique, which involves several different colors of Terra Sigillata, infused with gold or copper colored Mica which creates unique patterns and a mother-of-pearl effect when light shines on our instruments.
How to play the Natey flute Step 1: Holding and Finger Placement Hold the Natey with all six holes on the top and the thumb hole on the bottom (left side) closed. Use your index, middle, and ring fingers of both hands to cover the six upper holes. Close the thumb hole with your left thumb. Let your pinkies remain free to support the Natey. Step 2: Producing a Sound Blow into the mouthpiece at the back of the Natey with a long, steady exhalation. Use a soft “T” sound to articulate the note: “T…”. This creates a clean, clear tone without any harsh beginnings. Step 3: Pentatonic Scale Lift your fingers one by one, starting with your right hand from the bottom to the top, followed by your left hand. Play the pentatonic scale: Do, Re#, Fa, Sol, La#, Do2. More air pressure is needed for higher notes, especially when all the holes are open. Step 4: Finger Technique Start from the bottom and move upward for a smooth transition. Combine the tones to play pentatonic melodies, similar to the Native American Flute. Step 5: Overblowing The Natey is a closed, or vessel, instrument and cannot be overblown to reach a second octave like open flutes. This allows you to use more breath for expression without switching octaves. Step 6: Instrument Characteristics Higher-pitched Nateys have a clearer, richer sound and often require a bit more breath pressure. Larger Nateys use less pressure and produce a softer, more meditative tone. Final Note The Natey offers you the freedom to express yourself musically with ease.
